Final Video for Saudade
María Velasco
Is a Spanish -born artist that came to United States in 1990. She got her Bachelors Degree in Painting from the Universidad Complutense of Madrid in 1989, received her Masters of Fine Arts in New Genre from the University of California at Santa Barbara in 1993. In 1995, she began teaching at the University of Kansas, Lawrence, KS, where she currently works as an Associate Professor of Fine Arts.
Maria is creating very experimental work in New Media with the use of the projections, Installations, animations , sculpture and Drawing. Her work investigates notions of female identity, sexuality, and language. She has worked with installation, video, sound, photography, and performance. Her approach to art is to engage with the surrounding space, to create and overwhelming experience, where viewers wouldn't be able to identify the beginning and the end of the magical world. By bringing together layers of history, culture and personal experience in poetic and intellectually challenging ways, she creates an experience rather than a single piece.
She is an internationally known artist. Her work had been displayed in Spain, Germany, Mexico, Argentina and Paraguay. Her work has been exhibited widely, nationally and internationally in university and private museums, and contemporary art venues such as The Soap Factory in Minneapolis, MN, the Contemporary Arts Forum in Santa Barbara, CA, the ARC gallery in Chicago, IL, the Spencer Museum Of Art, Lawrence, KS, the Paula Cooper gallery and the Elizabeth Foundation For The Arts, both in NYC.
"I use my artwork as a vehicle for exploration, as a tool to encompass art and life, and as a mirror where unexpected connections and relationships arise. In my work, I seek beauty, wonder, and connection." - María Velasco

Artist stuff
I recently found this work by Chris Larson. He has been invited to participate in the 2014 whitney biennial. his piece "deep north" was inspired by a sudden snowstorm he saw in Switzerland.
"…while vacationing in Versiox Switzerland, an intense ice storm moved in the night before covering everything. He said it was "gorgeous and apocalyptic." This inspired him to recreate the moment in his hometown of St. Paul, Minnesota. In the fall of 2008, he built a house, and then in February, the coldest month of the year in Minnesota, he sprayed hundreds of gallons of water on the house to recreate what he witnessed in Versiox. He then shot a short film inside of the house called "Deep North"."
Some people say that it is related to global warming and environmental concerns. Others say that it has Protestant imagery because the machinery and labor involved in it focuses on a way of life centered around working. I was personally attracted to the piece because it can also be related to memory and time. Interestingly these were also made into photographs and the double play of freezing time literally and metaphorically is another facet to this work. The use of objects in the house give it a sense of personalization that i am still trying to figure out in my thesis work. In some ways these pieces can be related to photographs of Chernobyl and of New Orleans after Katrina. The presence created by the objects implies inhabitants even if they are not actually pictured. I find that the frozen quality lacks the sense of tragedy or moroseness that might come from places where actual tragedy occurred. I am not sure how much historical context/knowledge plays into the viewpoint of this piece. Perhaps my perception would be different if someone told me a story of it. Because I know its created I have a positive feeling about it. Also the light quality of the ice adds to the positive feeling. Ice also gives the potential for a thaw, which is more positive than something resulting from destruction.
I have been thinking a lot about personal objects and what makes them significant. Some of the objects in this piece have a newer quality to it. Other objects have a sense of age or history to them, like the television or the push button telephone on the dresser. The use of the 'shotgun' style house was also of interest to me as that has multiple cultural associations but not very often with frozen climates. The video is very interesting but I think I find the photographs more compelling because of the frozen time association I spoke of earlier.

Broken Art _ Movie_ with artist statement
Broken
Art
Jihwan Park
Artists who art not satisfied with the
accepted canon of previous art feel compelled to break that art. My Broken Art
series is literally breaking artwork. This artwork references iconic images
from the recent past. Through breaking, these icons, which represent things, are
turned into symbols (which represent words). There is a mysterious correlation between
the icons and symbols in Broken Art. Among the works in the series, the word
TEAR is created by tearing canvas, and the word LOVE is created by broken wood
stretchers with torn canvas cloth making a heart shape. There are other elements
in the series with these semiotic characteristics.
Broken Art reflects contemporary art. It
explains how some of modern art was born, and satirizes the contemporary art
world. Seeking only monetary value in art is called Broken Art, but breaking art
from the past in order to find a new direction can also be called Broken Art.
My
Broken Art series comes from the experience in which my artistic legacy was
trampled by people. My work attempts to show that even though they may break the
artist’s legacy, they cannot destroy the artist’s inspiration. Even with broken
art, an artist can create something of great value.

In my research on artists who use glass in their work, I came across Shayna Leib.
Her work isn't extremely relevant to my final installation piece, but I love her use of glass with regard to space. Her piece entitled "EQ" in particular is visually interesting, in its use of different heights and proportions.

artist
Russell Mills is an artist I really enjoy. His work has been used often for music related things such as album covers etc. His use of materials, in particular the textures and complexity of the images is something I really appreciate, probably more so now than before. There is a resonance to his work for me and i suspect that comes from the layers and the "old" feel to some of his pieces. He uses a lot of different materials, coal dust and wax, sometimes feathers and found objects. I see similarities to my own photographs in some of his textures etc.

Video Project
Here's my video project for this class. I'm not really going to provide any context for this at all, because I'd like to just hear what you think from seeing it cold. I'm imagining you'll get the jist of it pretty quick though, so don't fret too much. It's about ~5 minutes long or so.

Process of Broken Art
I have been making Broken Art series in this semester.
You might remember what the word is inside of the canvases.
I am making artwork by breaking my artwork.
At the same time, I am referencing previous artwork directly or indirectly.
Some works of art focuses on art historical background, and others provide strange semiotic experiences. These pictures are Love pieces. At the final critique you may see other three pieces.
I want to share one shocking artist, Wim Delvoye.
He is Dutch, and now became very famous.
Here is the video about his most famous artwork Cloaca.
Cloaca is the machine that creates excrement from foods.
Have fun and please eat something before watching this.

Gianluigi Toccafondo
I've been looking at work by Gianluigi Toccafondo, an artist who paints directly on top of film sequences. You might have seen his work during the Robin Hood end titles:
It relates to what I'm working on right now, although his work is looser. I'm thinking of making the end of the animation I'm working on looser and messier as it progresses, sort of like this.

Roman Signer
Signer is a swedish "action sculptor." His sculptures undergo some action or process which has aesthetic appeal. In this way the work skirts between being sculpture, and being performance.
The work is often playful. Also, explosions!

Not Related to My Work, But Still Cool
So I saw this video when the guy posted it a year ago, and thought it was awesome, but then I showed it to someone recently, and thought maybe you guys might enjoy it.
The video's related to painting, but I won't say much more, so you should just watch it. It's only ~3 minutes long.

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=v1tZfky-LLU
this is something I made in the backseat of a car driving through somewhere around pittsburgh. we were lost, and I think that's the only context that's important. but I'm unsure about where I want this to go, and what if any sound is used.
so please watch and comment anything!! I would like to hear any ideas or feelings ya'll have about being lost, struggling, and what you think so far.

I found a video and image that inspired and reminded me of my work.
The movement in the link below inspired me for my cubist painting/video. This video below is an abstract animation in black and white.
Another image I found that reminds me of my cubist painting is by Chidi Okoye a Nigerian sculptor, painter and poet.

Everything!
This is a show about "everything," and is just a bunch of short films made by various artists, some are funny, others are disturbing, and they're all pretty weird but I am fascinated with how short most of them are and how expertly the artists convey peculiar messages. A lot of them deal with human behavior and thought, which is also interesting to me. I have been making mostly music videos like we discussed yesterday in class, and shared a few of those influences, but I think these experimental films move in a direction I want to think about more, while still continuing to use music but not necessarily making it the focus or main factor of the works.

Gummy Bear Art
Hey everyone, although I have not gone yet for mid-term week. I have been working on a gummy bear affiliated piece. I have changed my ideas from day to day, the tape wasn't work out the way I was expecting. I found this artist who made a chandelier out of cast acrylic gummy bears below is a link and some photos. My work isn't quite at the point of taking a photo of it yet and it's 2D rather than sculptural. Also my piece is made out of real gummy bears just another added touch, literally.

Saudade.
"Saudade is a Portuguese and Galician word that has no direct translation in English. It describes a deep emotional state of nostalgic or deeply melancholic longing for an absent something or someone that one loves.
Saudade was once described as "the love that remains" after someone is gone. Saudade is the recollection of feelings, experiences, places or events that once brought excitement, pleasure, well-being, which now triggers the senses and makes one live again. It can be described as an emptiness, like someone or something that should be there in a particular moment is missing, and the individual feels this absence. It brings sad and happy feelings all together, sadness for missing and happiness for having experienced the feeling."
...and that feeling/word is what inspired my work.
Along with this definition I'm making a video and I intend to do an installation.
I'm trying to show how it feels to be a foreigner, being far from home, the little things that make me miss my everyday life back in Brazil.
I'm trying to play with the 2D and 3D world, the 2D being the memories and the 3D the real life.
Some pictures of what I've been doing.
