Is a Spanish -born artist that came to United States in 1990. She got her Bachelors Degree in Painting from the Universidad Complutense of Madrid in 1989, received her Masters of Fine Arts in New Genre from the University of California at Santa Barbara in 1993. In 1995, she began teaching at the University of Kansas, Lawrence, KS, where she currently works as an Associate Professor of Fine Arts.
Maria is creating very experimental work in New Media with the use of the projections, Installations, animations , sculpture and Drawing. Her work investigates notions of female identity, sexuality, and language. She has worked with installation, video, sound, photography, and performance. Her approach to art is to engage with the surrounding space, to create and overwhelming experience, where viewers wouldn't be able to identify the beginning and the end of the magical world. By bringing together layers of history, culture and personal experience in poetic and intellectually challenging ways, she creates an experience rather than a single piece.
She is an internationally known artist. Her work had been displayed in Spain, Germany, Mexico, Argentina and Paraguay. Her work has been exhibited widely, nationally and internationally in university and private museums, and contemporary art venues such as The Soap Factory in Minneapolis, MN, the Contemporary Arts Forum in Santa Barbara, CA, the ARC gallery in Chicago, IL, the Spencer Museum Of Art, Lawrence, KS, the Paula Cooper gallery and the Elizabeth Foundation For The Arts, both in NYC.
