Final Video for Saudade

I walked through a bunch of different ideias, but all of them were around the 2D world being the missing part and the 3D being what's missing. I decide to go for a video then, trying to translate a little bit of what a feel. Along the way I ended up having some problems with my script and the video is kind of incomplete. But I think that is still expressive.

And here is the link for my final video: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=fqi0j5WNDko&feature=youtu.be

María Velasco
Is a Spanish -born artist that came to United States in 1990. She got her Bachelors  Degree in Painting from the Universidad Complutense of Madrid in 1989, received her Masters of Fine Arts in New  Genre from the University of California at Santa Barbara in 1993. In 1995, she began teaching at the University of Kansas, Lawrence, KS, where she currently works as an Associate Professor of Fine Arts.

Maria is creating very experimental work in New Media with the use of the projections, Installations,  animations , sculpture and Drawing. Her work investigates notions of female identity, sexuality, and language. She has worked with installation, video, sound, photography, and performance. Her approach to art is to engage with the surrounding space, to create and overwhelming experience, where viewers wouldn't be able to identify the beginning and the end of the magical world. By bringing together layers of history, culture and personal experience in poetic and intellectually challenging ways, she creates an experience rather than a single piece.

She is an internationally known artist. Her work had been displayed in Spain, Germany, Mexico, Argentina and Paraguay. Her work has been exhibited widely, nationally and internationally in university and private museums, and contemporary art venues such as The Soap Factory in Minneapolis, MN, the Contemporary Arts Forum in Santa Barbara, CA, the ARC gallery in Chicago, IL, the Spencer Museum Of Art, Lawrence, KS, the Paula Cooper gallery and the Elizabeth Foundation For The Arts, both in NYC.
"I use my artwork as a vehicle for exploration, as a tool to encompass art and life, and as a mirror where unexpected connections and relationships arise. In my work, I seek beauty, wonder, and connection." - María Velasco

Artist stuff

I recently found this work by Chris Larson. He has been invited to participate in the 2014 whitney biennial. his piece "deep north" was inspired by a sudden snowstorm he saw in Switzerland.

"…while vacationing in Versiox Switzerland, an intense ice storm moved in the night before covering everything. He said it was "gorgeous and apocalyptic." This inspired him to recreate the moment in his hometown of St. Paul, Minnesota. In the fall of 2008, he built a house, and then in February, the coldest month of the year in Minnesota, he sprayed hundreds of gallons of water on the house to recreate what he witnessed in Versiox. He then shot a short film inside of the house called "Deep North"."

Some people say that it is related to global warming and environmental concerns. Others say that it has Protestant imagery because the machinery and labor involved in it focuses on a way of life centered around working. I was personally attracted to the piece because it can also be related to memory and time. Interestingly these were also made into photographs and the double play of freezing time literally and metaphorically is another facet to this work. The use of objects in the house give it a sense of personalization that i am still trying to figure out in my thesis work. In some ways these pieces can be related to photographs of Chernobyl and of New Orleans after Katrina. The presence created by the objects implies inhabitants even if they are not actually pictured. I find that the frozen quality lacks the sense of tragedy or moroseness that might come from places where actual tragedy occurred. I am not sure how much historical context/knowledge plays into the viewpoint of this piece. Perhaps my perception would be different if someone told me a story of it. Because I know its created I have a positive feeling about it. Also the light quality of the ice adds to the positive feeling. Ice also gives the potential for a thaw, which is more positive than something resulting from destruction.

I have been thinking a lot about personal objects and what makes them significant. Some of the objects in this piece have a newer quality to it. Other objects have a sense of age or history to them, like the television or the push button telephone on the dresser. The use of the 'shotgun' style house was also of interest to me as that has multiple cultural associations but not very often with frozen climates. The video is very interesting but I think I find the photographs more compelling because of the frozen time association I spoke of earlier.

Broken Art _ Movie_ with artist statement

Broken Art
                                                                                                                 Jihwan Park
Artists who art not satisfied with the accepted canon of previous art feel compelled to break that art. My Broken Art series is literally breaking artwork. This artwork references iconic images from the recent past. Through breaking, these icons, which represent things, are turned into symbols (which represent words). There is a mysterious correlation between the icons and symbols in Broken Art. Among the works in the series, the word TEAR is created by tearing canvas, and the word LOVE is created by broken wood stretchers with torn canvas cloth making a heart shape. There are other elements in the series with these semiotic characteristics.
Broken Art reflects contemporary art. It explains how some of modern art was born, and satirizes the contemporary art world. Seeking only monetary value in art is called Broken Art, but breaking art from the past in order to find a new direction can also be called Broken Art.

My Broken Art series comes from the experience in which my artistic legacy was trampled by people. My work attempts to show that even though they may break the artist’s legacy, they cannot destroy the artist’s inspiration. Even with broken art, an artist can create something of great value.

In my research on artists who use glass in their work, I came across Shayna Leib.
Her work isn't extremely relevant to my final installation piece, but I love her use of glass with regard to space. Her piece entitled "EQ" in particular is visually interesting, in its use of different heights and proportions.

Russell Mills is an artist I really enjoy. His work has been used often for music related things such as album covers etc. His use of materials, in particular the textures and complexity of the images is something I really appreciate, probably more so now than before. There is a resonance to his work for me and i suspect that comes from the layers and the "old" feel to some of his pieces. He uses a lot of different materials, coal dust and wax, sometimes feathers and found objects. I see similarities to my own photographs in some of his textures etc.

Video Project

Here's my video project for this class. I'm not really going to provide any context for this at all, because I'd like to just hear what you think from seeing it cold. I'm imagining you'll get the jist of it pretty quick though, so don't fret too much. It's about ~5 minutes long or so.

Here's where my video is at right now. I should be able to finish up soon and then project the final movie onto the original painting.

Feedback would be appreciated!
